Born in Italy and raised in California, Artemare is inspired by days under the sun, weekend wanderlust, and holidays in the world’s most beautiful destinations. Their collection of luxury resort accessories and active leisure goods brings the seductive notion of an endless vacation to any setting or activity. In the world of luxury beach accessories, Artemare stands out for its exquisite designs and resort-ready elegance. Recently, I had the privilege of photographing their latest collection amidst the stunning backdrop of Musa, a tropical paradise nestled along the Pacific coast of Mexico.

From plush towels to chic tote bags, and even beach and pickleball rackets, every item exuded a sense of sophistication perfect for those lounging by the pool. Additionally, the photoshoot presented an exciting opportunity to capture the essence of Casa Tsili, a breathtaking retreat boasting minimalist aesthetics and an infinity pool that seemingly melds into the ocean beyond. Let’s delve into the behind-the-scenes of this captivating shoot, and explore the artistry of capturing luxury in both beach accessories and dreamy properties like Casa Tsili.

The Allure of Artemare:
Artemare‘s commitment to quality and style was evident in every detail of their collection. From the sumptuous texture of their towels to the sleek design of their tote bags, each item epitomized luxury and refinement. As a photographer, it was a pleasure to capture the intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail that defines the Artemare brand. With careful composition and lighting, I sought to highlight the unique features of each accessory, allowing their beauty to shine through in every shot.

A Day in Paradise: 
Musa, with its palm-fringed shores and long coastline provided the ultimate canvas for showcasing Artemare’s collection. Against this backdrop of natural splendor, each accessory radiated effortless glamour, beckoning guests to indulge in leisurely afternoons by the sea. The soft sands and gentle ocean breeze added a touch of serenity to the ambiance, enhancing the allure of the products and setting the stage for an unforgettable shoot.

Casa Tsili: A Modern Oasis:
Nestled along the coastline, Casa Tsili offered a striking contrast to the natural beauty of Musa. With its clean lines, minimalist decor, and panoramic views of the ocean, the villa exuded contemporary elegance. The infinity pool, seemingly merging with the azure horizon, created a sense of infinite possibility and tranquility. As I explored the property with my camera, I was captivated by the interplay of light and shadow, and the seamless blend of indoor and outdoor spaces. Capturing the essence of Casa Tsili was a testament to the artistry of architectural photography, and a reminder of the power of design to inspire and uplift.

Shooting properties, whether it be hotels, Airbnbs, or private residences, is a passion of mine. Each location tells a unique story, and it’s my privilege as a photographer to bring that story to life through images. From capturing the grandeur of a luxury resort to highlighting the cozy charm of a beachfront bungalow, property photography allows me to showcase the beauty and character of each space. Whether it’s through sweeping vistas or intimate details, I strive to create images that evoke emotion and inspire wanderlust in those who view them.

Sisstr Evolution Spring/Summer 2024 Collection: Surfing in Mexico

Discover the magic of Sisstr Evolution’s latest collection with our photoshoot in Mexico featuring the three surfer girls Macy Machado, Indie Hoffman, and Tasha Jahrmarkt. Follow our journey from surf to sunset as we capture the essence of summer on the pacific coast of Mexico. 

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Mexico’s coastal beauty, our team embarked on a journey to capture the vibrancy and energy of the brand’s newest lineup. Joined by the three talented surfer girls – Macy Machado, Indie Hoffman, and Tasha Jahrmarkt – our photoshoot for Sisstr Evolution last collection unfolded with surf, sun, and endless adventure. 

Surfing in Style

The three surfers flew to Mexico to compete at the Mexilogfest longboard surf festival, which happens every year and reunites 200 of the world best’s longboarders. Kicking off the day with a splash, Macy, Indie, and Tasha spent the morning surfing in long perfect waves.  Their fluid movements and contagious enthusiasm set the tone for the day ahead, embodying the spirit of Sisstr Evolution’s dynamic designs. From sleek swimsuits to stylish surfwear, every piece from the collection effortlessly blended fashion with function, ensuring the girls could ride the waves in style.

Exploring Nature’s Beauty

After the surf session and a lunch break made of tacos, our exploration led us into the heart of Mexico’s natural splendor. Meandering through picturesque palm groves, we embraced the serenity of the surroundings, pausing to pluck fruits and savor the tropical delights. Amidst the lush greenery, we captured candid moments of laughter and sisterhood, immortalizing the joy of our adventure.

Golden Hour Magic

As the sun began its descent, casting a warm glow across the horizon, we returned to the sandy shores for a magical sunset session. Against the backdrop of a painted sky, Macy, Indie, and Tasha reveled in the sheer joy of the moment. With the ocean as their playground, they danced in the surf, their silhouettes illuminated by the golden hues of twilight. Each frame captured the essence of freedom and spontaneity, embodying the carefree spirit of summer.

Last September, I had the opportunity to shoot a video for Cake electric bikes in the breathtaking tropical paradise of Musa, Mexico. My mission: capturing the essence of freedom and eco-conscious exploration against the stunning backdrop of the Mexican Pacific coast.

Its picturesque vistas and vibrant culture provided the perfect canvas for our photoshoot with Cake. 

Against the backdrop of Muse’s tropical allure, our photoshoot with Cake Electric Bikes was a symphony of excitement and exploration. Joined by a group of three spirited girls, we embarked on a journey through palm groves and along sandy shores, all while experiencing the thrill of electric motorbikes. As we navigated the coastline, laughter echoed through the air, resonating the joy of freedom and discovery. From narrow jungle paths to expansive beaches, each snapshot encapsulated the essence of adventure and the beauty of sustainable travel.

At the heart of our photoshoot lay Cake bikes’ mission to accelerate the transition towards a zero-emission society. To demonstrate that sustainable travel and responsible exploration exist and that riders can explore nature’s wonders without leaving a carbon footprint behind. One of the highlights of our photoshoot was showcasing Cake Electric Bikes’ commitment to sustainability. With their electric-powered engines and eco-conscious design, Cake bikes offer a cleaner, greener alternative for adventurers seeking to explore. The bikes are quiet, light and clean: the next level in the category of light electric off-road performance motorcycle.

Vans Pipe Masters 2023

The legendary surf contest on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii

 
The dream of any surfer and surf photographer alike is to go to Pipeline – a wave that needs no introduction, reigning as the most well-known on the planet and a prominent feature on the bucket list of many wave riders. For both surfers and photographers, Vans Pipe Master is more than just a competition, it is a testament to the belief that dreams do come true.
 
My first venture to the North Shore of Oahu in 2018 marked the beginning of my journey as a surf photographer. In November 2018, I embarked on a trip to Hawaii, eager to shoot the Vans Triple Crown as an amateur photographer and fervent surf enthusiast. Little did I know that this experience would serve as a pivotal moment of my life, solidifying my determination to evolve into a professional surf photographer. At the time, I made a promise to myself: one day, I would return to Hawaii as a professional behind the lens. 

Fast forward to December 2023, and that promise transformed into reality as I got an invitation from Vans to document the event. The Vans Pipe Masters 2023 unfolded as the culmination of hard work and unwavering dedication and passion. Dreams do come true if you work hard enough for them.

The event brought together 60 of the world’s best surfers to the legendary North Shore of Oahu. Each surfer, handpicked by Vans, made their way to Hawaii to surf Pipeline, all for a chance at a staggering $500,000 in cash prizes and the opportunity to surf the break in an empty line up. Among the 60 invitees, half of them were from the Hawaiian islands. In an awe-inspiring culmination, six of the eight finalists proudly flew the Hawaiian flag, showcasing the immense talent that the Hawaiian islands has cultivated.

North Shore locals, John John Florence and Moana Jones-Wong, emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, solidifying their status as Pipe Masters. This is the second year in a row that Moana takes the crown here, keeping her well-deserved title of Queen of Pipe at her local break.

One of the event’s highlights was the opening ceremony led by Nā Kama Kai and his family, a poignant homage to Hawaiian traditions. The ceremony not only set the tone for the competition but also provided a glimpse into the magic and warmth of the North Shore. Even Rainbow, a symbol of good luck in Hawaiian culture, made a memorable appearance, adding an extra layer of enchantment to the proceedings.

A notable spectacle during the heats was the extraordinary sight of the three Florence brothers, John John, Nathan, and Ivan, surfing in the same heats. This rare display of familial talent resonated with spectators, emphasizing the deep connection these surfers share with their home surf break.

Harry Briant etched his name into Pipe Masters history by scoring a perfect 30 on the final day, a heat that left the audience in awe. Additionally, the premiere of his short film, “Motel Hell” by Dave Fox, was a night to remember. Make sure to watch the movie when it is out!

Noteworthy performances were not limited to the local surfers. South African surfer Mike February showcased his prowess at Backdoor, earning perfect waves during his first heat. Cherif Fall, a surfer hailing from Senegal, added a global flair to the competition, proving that the allure of Pipeline transcends borders. Billy Kemper, Hawaiian surfer, scored some heavy waves, earning fairly his spot into the finals.

The Pipe Masters marked the second year of a dedicated women’s division, allowing female surfers to surf Pipeline for the coveted title. 

Moana Jones-Wong, crowned queen of Pipe for the second consecutive year, continued to captivate the crowd with her fearless and powerful surfing. The local surfer has become a symbol of female empowerment, proving that the world’s deadliest wave is no match for her skill and determination.

The Malibu local Frankie Harrer got locked into some pretty nice left barrels, as well as others like Bethany Hamilton, Coco Ho, Carissa Moore, Erin Brooks, Molly Picklum… It was truly mind-blowing to see the next generation of surfer girls like Sierra Kerr and Erin Brooks absolutely sending it in some of the heaviest waves.

However, Pipeline hasn’t been just perfect barrels during the entire competition. There have also been some pretty bad surf conditions and bad wipeouts sending Hawaiian local surfer girl Ewe Wong and Tahitian surfer Eimeo Czermak to the hospital. The men’s final also happened to be in chaotic conditions. 

Beyond the waves, the Vans Pipe Masters extended its festivities to the Banzai skatepark, where the Vans skate team, including Rowan Zorilla and Elijah Berle, treated the crowd to an exhilarating demo day. The skaters shared the stoke, interacted with local kids, and distributed goodies, further solidifying the event’s sense of community.

As the event concluded, a heartfelt “Mahalo” echoed to Vans, the organizers, and, most importantly, the Hawaiian and North Shore locals who graciously hosted and welcomed the surfing world with open arms. The Vans Pipe Masters 2023 will be remembered not only for the incredible feats on the waves but also for the unity, tradition, and aloha spirit that permeated the North Shore throughout the competition. Women of color in the surfing world

Shooting the last collaboration of Slowtide x Textured Waves

When it comes to women of color in the world of surfing, representation has been a long-standing issue. However, a group of passionate and driven young women is determined to change that narrative. Textured Waves propagates the culture and sport of women’s surfing towards women of color and underrepresented demographics. Founded in 2019 by three African American female surfers: Danielle Black Lyons, Chelsea Woody and Martina Duran, their aim is to bring representation, inclusion and community in the world of surfing.

Textured waves just launched a collection in collaboration with Slowtide, which is proud to support their values of integrity, inclusion and advocating diversity in the water. The design was created in collaboration with artist Tierney Moses and illustrates the different shapes and shades women come in. It is inspired by the beauty and power of womanhood in the world of surfing. 

The girls came to Mexico for a surf trip at the end of June and I had the privilege to shoot their collection here. With the azure sea as their playground and surfboards as their weapons, the group radiated confidence, determination, and a shared mission to challenge stereotypes. Dressed in vibrant, eye-catching swimwear, the women showcased their surfing skills, reminding us that the ocean doesn’t discriminate. As they rode the waves, it was evident that passion knows no boundaries and that the world of surfing should be an inclusive space for all.

Beyond the picturesque shots, this photoshoot carries a powerful message. It’s a reminder that we need more voices and stories from women of color in the surfing world. It’s an invitation to celebrate diversity and to break down the barriers that have kept these talented surfers in the shadows for far too long.

These inspiring women are not just riding waves; they are breaking them. They are shattering stereotypes and demanding that the world of surfing opens its doors to everyone. This photoshoot is not just about capturing their grace and strength but also about amplifying their voices and paving the way for a more inclusive future in the world of surfing.

I am beyond excited to share these images and their incredible stories, hoping to inspire change in the surfing world and encourage more women of color to join the ocean.

Exploring the enchanting fall season in Hossegor, France while shooting Sisstr Evolution Fall/Winter 22 campaign

As summer bids adieu and the days grow shorter, a captivating transformation unfolds in the small coastal town of Hossegor, France. Nestled in the southwestern part of the country, this idyllic destination unveils a tapestry of colors, surf swells, and a serene atmosphere during the enchanting fall season. Renowned as a surfer’s haven, Hossegor’s fall season brings a wave of excitement. As summer crowds recede, the ocean swells rise, bestowing the town with consistent and powerful waves. Surfers from around the globe flock to Hossegor to challenge themselves against the well-known waves of Les Landes area. Join me on a vibrant journey as I follow two professional surfers girl for the photoshoot of Sisstr Evolution Fall/Winter 22 campaign. 

Greeted by Nature’s Kaleidoscope

As the sun rises over Hossegor, the town is bathed in the warm hues of autumn. Accompanied by two professional surfer girls : Samantha Sibley and Sofi Loewy, we embark on a walk through the enchanting forest of pines, where the trees transform into a breathtaking kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, and yellows. The vibrant foliage serves as a vivid backdrop, heightening the anticipation for the day’s surf adventure. As she came to Europe to compete for the WSL QS events, Californian surfer Samantha Sibley stopped in Hossegor to visit her Sisstr teammate Sofi Loewy. 

The Thrill of the Waves

The girls lead us to the renowned beaches of Hossegor, where the Atlantic Ocean presents its best swells. As they wax their surfboards, the excitement in the air is palpable. Waves are small but the water is crystal clear and the sun is shining. It is a beautiful morning in Hossegor. Their skills and passion create an awe-inspiring spectacle, inspiring everyone around them.

Savoring the Swell: A Well-Earned Morning Coffee in Hossegor

After an invigorating morning session of watching the girls conquer the waves, we paused to recharge with a steaming cup of coffee. At this time of the year, mornings in France are cold and we enjoyed the warmth of our beverages. As we sip our coffees, the conversation flows effortlessly, filled with tales of early morning surf sessions, the camaraderie among surfers, and the profound connection they feel with the ocean. Energized and inspired, we eagerly anticipate the rest of the day, ready to dive back into the excitement of Hossegor’s fall season.

Embracing Tranquility: A Serene Interlude at the Lake

As the day unfolds, our journey takes an unexpected turn, leading us to a serene oasis nestled amidst the beauty of Hossegor – the lake. We pause our surfing adventures momentarily, drawn to the tranquil waters reflecting the vibrant colors of fall season. Sitting at the water’s edge, we bask in the peaceful ambiance, taking in the picturesque scene. Refreshed and rejuvenated, we prepare to continue our exploration of the fall wonders of Hossegor.

A Tranquil Evening Unfolds with a Majestic Sunset on the Beach

As the golden hour casts its enchanting spell over Hossegor, we eagerly make our way to the beach to witness the breathtaking spectacle of the sunset. The sky transforms into a kaleidoscope of hues, painting strokes of pink, orange, and yellow across the horizon. We find a cozy spot in the sand, the soothing sound of crashing waves providing the perfect soundtrack to the mesmerizing display before us. As the sun slowly descends, casting its warm glow over the water, we embrace the serenity of the moment.

My essential accessories for photography

Photography is not just about having a great camera: it’s also about having the right accessories that can enhance your creative vision and help you be more efficient in your workflow. As a professional photographer, here are my essential photography accessories that I use daily in my photography workflow. From capturing unique perspectives to improving the quality of your images and speeding up your workflow, these accessories can make a significant difference in your photographic journey. 

  •  A CFexpress memory card

    CFexpress memory cards represent the next level of performance and reliability in the world of memory card technology. With their lightning-fast speeds, large storage capacities, enhanced durability, future-proof technology, and professional-grade performance, CFexpress cards have gained immense popularity among all photographers and videographers. It has been been game changing for me especially since I started shooting videos and shooting the surf in burst mode. My SD cards were often lagging and crashing while shooting, and switching to CFexpress has been solving the problem thanks to their high read speed capabilities. It is also much more quicker to export the files after shooting thanks to their exceptional write speed capabilities. This high-speed performance is particularly beneficial for photographers and videographers who capture high resolution images, shoot in burst mode, or record 4k or even 8k footage video. 

    I personally use the Sony CFexpress type B memory card for my nikon Z6ii.

    Caution : not all cameras have a memory card slot for CFexpress cards (as they are bigger than normal SD cards) so make sure your camera has a CFexpress memory card slot. If you end up buying a CFexpress memory card, make sure to also buy a CFexpress card reader. I personally use the one from San Disk that you can find here. 

  •  A Memory Card Holder case

    Organization is key and this memory card holder case is absolutely essential to me. It can store up to 15 memory cards, from micro SD cards to SD cards, CFexpress and XQD cards. It is also water-resistant and anti-shock which will provide full protection to your memory cards and files if it ever falls down or if it rains. 

    I personally use the SmallRig Memory Card Holder Case 15 slots.

  •  A SSD 

    Solid State Drives (SSDs) have outpaced traditional Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) in terms of speed, performance, reliability, durability, energy efficiency, and form factor. SSDs are renowned for their remarkable speed and performance. Whether you’re loading large multimedia files, editing videos, or running resource-intensive applications, SSDs provide a noticeable performance boost, enhancing productivity and user experience.

    Traditional HDDs are also susceptible to mechanical failures due to their intricate mechanical components. SSDs, on the other hand, have no moving parts, making them less prone to damage from shock, vibrations, or accidental drops. This inherent resilience makes SSDs more reliable, reducing the risk of data loss and minimizing the need for frequent backups.

  •  A CPL polarizer filter

    A polarizer filter is an indispensable tool for photographers seeking to enhance their images. From reducing reflections (which is absolutely essential for ma as a surf photographer to reduce reflection on the water) and increasing color saturation to darkening skies and enhancing details, the advantages of using a polarizer filter are numerous. By investing in a high-quality polarizer filter that matches your lens diameter, you can take your photography to the next level, capturing stunning, vibrant, and visually captivating images. If you are only shooting indoors/in a studio, I do not think a polarizer filter is necessary but this a great tool if you are shooting outdoors. 

    I personally use the Promaster CPL Prime filter.

  •  A reflector 

    Reflectors provide photographers with a flexible and affordable way to manipulate light, control shadows, and enhance the quality of their images. By positioning a reflector, you can bounce natural or artificial light onto your subject, filling in shadows and reducing contrast. This helps to create a more balanced and evenly lit scene. Reflectors can also soften harsh lighting conditions, such as direct sunlight or strong studio lights. By bouncing the light onto your subject through a reflector, you can diffuse and scatter the light, resulting in a softer, more flattering illumination. Reflectors come in various shapes, sizes and colors, providing versatility in light manipulation. White reflectors produce neutral and soft light, silver reflectors offer a more intense and specular reflection, gold reflector add warmth, whereas translucent reflectors can be used as diffusers.

  •  A Pelican case 

    Pelican cases are a great way to store and travel with all your camera equipment. I prefer a hard case over a camera backpack as a case is dust proof and anti-shock. It is also watertight and crush-proof, which provides full protection to all camera gear. It has wheels and an extended handle, making it easy to carry around. The dividers inside are adjustable in order to customise the case to fit any needs.  

    I personally use the Pelican air 1535 with padded dividers, which is perfect to travel with and bring as a carry-on in the plane.

  •  A tripod

    A tripod provides stability, eliminating any camera shake and ensuring sharp and focused images, especially in low-light situations or when using longer exposure times. Secondly, it allows for precise composition and framing, as the photographer can make minor adjustments without the risk of altering the camera’s position unintentionally. Overall, a tripod is an indispensable tool that enhances image quality, composition, and opens up a world of creative possibilities for photographers. A tripod enables the photographer to explore creative techniques such as long exposure photography or even to shoot some self portraits.

  •  A camera cleaning kit

    There is always a camera cleaning kit in my pelican case. The cleaning kit combines all the necessary tools to keep your camera, lens, and sensor free from dust, dirt, and smudges. Making sure your camera and sensor is always perfectly clean will definitely enhance the quality of your photography.

Vans Duct Tape Invitational headed to Rio de Janeiro

The Vans Duct Tape Invitational in Rio de Janeiro:
A Celebration of The Longboarding Culture in Macumba Beach

Vans headed to the iconic Macumba Beach in Rio de Janeiro for its 11th season of the Joel Tudor Vans Duct Tape Invitational. From May 12 to 14th, the event brought together 32 of the world’s best longboarders to showcase their style and talent in classic traditional surfing. 

Held in different locations around the world, this was the first Duct Tape event ever organized in South America, and it surely did not disappoint! Vans invited some local Brazilian surfers for the occasion, such as local surfer and shaper Caio Teixeira, Augusto Olinto, Jasmin Avelino, Marina Carbonell… Some well-known longboarders and previous champs were also present, including Alex Knost, Mikey February, Karina Rozunko, Harrison Roach, Justin Quintal… and many countries were represented: USA, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, France, South Africa, Japan…

Surfers were competing for a total prize purse of $48,000 split equally among men and women and split between final heats, expression sessions and shared waves. While surfing is what reunited us all in Brazil, the Vans DTI is so much more than this. The surf festival is a global cultural event showcasing art, local businesses, workshops, pop-ups, live surfboard shaping, music, and expression sessions on shorter boards. It is an event celebrating community and surf culture, where the spirit of friendship and global camaraderie transcends the boundaries of a mere surf contest. 

The competition was indeed secondary as the shared passion for surfing seamlessly blended with the joy of reconnecting with old friends and forging new bonds. The atmosphere pulsated with laughter, stories of epic rides and a genuine appreciation for the surf culture. Everyone was sharing smiles, beers and caipirinhas on the beach. Waves were pumping – head high to double overhead, brazilian music was blasting and everyone’s teeth were stained by açai.

Avalon Gall from Hawaii won the first place in the women division while Justin Quintal from Florida went home with his 11th Vans Duct Tape win. Japanese surfer Natsumi Taoka and local surfer Jasmin Avelino won the women expression sessions, as long as David Arganda from California and Johnny ‘The Ripper’ Van Hosenstein, who took the win on softboards. Johnny and Alex Knost also won the best shared wave prize during the finales, in heavy double overhead conditions.

In a world where surfing competitions are often focused on high-performance maneuvers and big prize money, the Vans Duct Tape Invitational stands out as a refreshing and inspiring celebration of creativity, style, and community. The event ended with a music party led by a phenomenal female samba band- everyone was singing, dancing, and making lifelong memories in the heart of Brazil. We went home with a vibrant heart and can only dream about the next one now.

Shooting a campaign for Roxy in El Salvador

Shooting a campaign for Roxy in El Salvador

El Salvador is just a short flight away from Mexico and yet, I had never been before. With its breathtaking landscapes and incredible surf scene, this tropical destination had been on my bucket list for a few years now. Shooting a campaign there for Roxy with the talented longboarder Zoe Grospiron was my opportunity to finally visit this beautiful country. Packing up all of my camera gear, I hopped on a plane from Mexico City and just three hours later, I found myself in the land of Surf City. 

The campaign

Over the course of eight days, I had the privilege of capturing Zoe’s journey as she traveled to El Salvador with her family and Brazilian friend Chloe Calmon. I was filming the first episode of a series focusing on their time in this stunning country, where they connected with local communities and young surfer girls. Zoe has been coming to El Salvador with her family for the past seven years now. 

The idea of this project was born out of her passion for travel, surfing and her desire to meet women from all over the world. After a set back last year, when she was injured and had to withdraw from surf competitions. she came up with the idea of starting a video series to share her experience and connect with women around the world. As the official photographer and videographer of this first episode, my job was to capture every moment of this trip. From the stunning landscapes to the beautiful waves and local culture, I documented every detail of every day. 

Meeting the next generation of surfer girls of El Salvador

We had the privilege of connecting with a group of talented local young women and learning about their goals and aspirations. Despite the challenges they face, they all share a common dream of becoming professional surfers and representing their country on the international stage.

It was truly inspiring to hear their stories and witness their dedication to the sport. Moreover, Zoe and Chloe were thrilled to share a surf session with them at sunset. We were absolutely blown away by their skills on the waves and the support between the girls.

How I became a surf photographer

How I became a surf photographer is probably not the typical surf photographer tale you usually read about. Unlike many others in the industry, I did not grow up near the ocean or even know how to surf. In fact, I was raised in the serene countryside of France and didn’t develop a passion for surfing until my late teenage years.

An emerging love for surfing and the ocean

Despite living far from the ocean, I started being obsessed with surfing in highschool. I eagerly devoured every surfing magazine I could get my hands on and would pin surf images to my walls. My dream was to someday live by the sea. One day, while reading an article in a surf magazine, I stumbled upon a surf photographer who was getting paid to travel the world and shoot campaigns for big brands like Rip Curl. I was blown away – I had never even considered that such a dream job existed! Although, I had never held a camera before, so the idea of becoming a surf photographer did not even cross my mind.

After graduating high school, I knew I wanted to pursue a career that involved the ocean. With this in mind, I decided to study marine biology. After completing my undergraduate degree, I was eager to continue learning and growing in this field. I applied for a master’s program in marine biology, excited for the opportunity to expand my knowledge and experience. As part of my program, I was required to complete an internship abroad during the first semester. With a deep desire to learn how to surf and immerse myself in a new culture, I set my sights on Australia. Following some research, I found an internship at Griffith University on the Gold Coast – a small lab specializing in coastal environments.

How I became a surf photographer and how it all began in Australia

In 2017, I flew to Australia to begin my internship and this is where my love for surfing truly blossomed. I spent my days learning about marine environments and catching waves on the southern beaches of the Gold Coast. I couldn’t get enough of the perfect right point breaks and crystal clear water. As I prepared for a road trip along the east coast of Australia, I decided to invest in a camera. I bought a pretty cheap DSLR camera and a 70-300mm lens. I wanted to capture every moment of this incredible journey and preserve memories that would last a lifetime.I took my first steps as a photographer in 2018, capturing the stunning landscapes of Australia through my lens.

As a passionate surfer, I knew that I wanted to channel my love for the sport into something more. I quickly discovered my passion for surf photography and began honing my craft. I had the chance to live close to some of the world’s best surf breaks, which was really inspiring. Every day, I headed out to some of my favorite spots to shoot, including Snapper Rocks, Kirra, and Dbah. These world-class surf breaks provided the perfect backdrop for my photography, and I soon began to develop my own unique style. 

As I continued to pursue my passion for surf photography, I also had the opportunity to connect with other like-minded individuals. I met a group of talented surf and water photographers on the Gold Coast, and it was incredible to have a community of creatives to share my passion with. My internship in Australia came to an end but I knew I wasn’t ready to leave. I decided to take a gap year and stay one more year in Australia to chase my dream. The goal was to pursue my love for surfing and surf photography. I worked as a waitress at night to support myself. But during the day, I was truly living the dream : surfing and taking photos every single day.

A life changing trip to Hawaii

I saved up all my tips from waitressing and booked a solo trip to Hawaii at the end of 2018. My dream was to photograph the Vans Triple Crown surf event on the North Shore of Oahu. It was a life-changing experience. The energy in Hawaii was electrifying, and I felt more inspired than ever before. The month I spent on the north shore of Oahu was the highlight of my life so far. Every day, I woke up for sunrise and stayed on the beach capturing the magic of the waves until sunset. It was just me, my camera, and my surfboard, living my passion to the fullest. I connected with as many people in the surf industry as I could and made some friends.

This is when I knew I wanted to make a career out of surf photography. It was truly the moment I told myself : “Wow this is it. This is what I want to do with my life!”.  Returning to Australia, I was filled with a sense of purpose.

How I became a professional surf photographer: turning my passion into a profession

I moved to Noosa in 2019 for the end of my gap year, where I was introduced to the longboarding world.  I made the most out of my gap year to learn about marketing, communication, sales and I worked tirelessly to build my photography website. Slowly, I started booking some small photography gigs. But my gap year was coming to an end, and I had to return to France to complete my master’s degree. I invested in a water housing for my camera and then flew to Moorea, French Polynesia for my master’s thesis. Though I loved studying marine biology, I knew that my heart was set on pursuing a career in surf photography. 

Following the graduation of my master in September 2020, I dove headfirst into my passion and started working full-time as a photographer. Since that moment, I’ve dedicated myself to perfecting my craft and capturing the beauty of surfing in new and exciting ways. I started investing little by little in new camera gear – check out this article if you want to learn more about all my camera gear. Last year, I also started shooting videos and I now enjoy shooting both surfing videos and photos.

Looking back on my surf photography journey, I am grateful for the experiences that led me to where I am today. From my initial desire to work with the ocean, to learning how to surf and capturing moments with my camera, each step has played a vital role in shaping who I am and how I became a surf photographer.
